Chana Dal Recipe With Mutton

Method

Step 1:

Start off  this chana dal recipe by washing the mutton and chana dal thoroughly. Make sure you soak the chana dal for atleast 15-30 minutes prior to cooking. Now, roughly chop 3 onions and the tomatoes. Put these ingredients in the blender seperately to get a fine onion and tomato puree. Pour these into a bowl and keep it aside.

Step 2:

Heat the oil in a pressure cooker and add the whole garam masala ingredient mentioned above. Once these ingredients start to sizzle, pour only the onion puree and stir it well on medium flame until the puree turns light golden.

Now, add ginger and garlic paste, followed by coriander, cumin, chilli and  turmeric powder respectively. Finally add salt and stir everything well for 1 minute.

Step 3:

Once all these ingredients turn a bit dry, add the washed mutton into the mixture and keep stirring everything until the mutton is completely dry and changes colour (slightly dark).

Now, add the chana dal and mix everything for 2 minutes. Pour in the tomato puree next and again give everything a good mix.

Step 4:

Pour a cup of water in the cooker, mix it well and cover the lid and let it whistle until the chana dal and mutton is completely cooked. Make sure you keep checking it from time to time.

Step 5:

Meanwhile, take the kasoori methi and put it in the microwave for 5 seconds to make it crispy. After both chana dal and mutton is perfectly cooked, add some water based on the consistency you want for the dal.

Make sure the dal is not too thin or runny. Preferably go for a mildly thick consistency.

Step 6:

Add the garam masala powder and take the microwaved kasoori methi and rub it between your palms as you add it to the chana dal recipe in the cooker.

Top it off with some coriander leaves and simply cover the lid and let the dish boil for 2 minutes. After this, pour the dish in a bowl and put it aside.

Step 7: (For Tadka) * Optional*

Take a pan and heat 4 tablespoon of oil. Add the remaining 2 onions that are thinly sliced and stir it until it turns golden brown.

Now, turn off the gas and let the oil cool down for a minute. Then, add some chilli powder as per your taste. Your tadka is ready for your chana dal recipe.

Step 8:

Finally, pour the tadka on top of your mutton and chana dal recipe and garnish with some coriander leaves.

This divine chana dal recipe with mutton is best served with paratha, naan and even chapati.

Bonus Tips:

1. For kasoori methi, instead of the microwave, you can even use a pan for roasting it. Simply, heat the pan for a minute and turn off the gas. Now, put the kasoori methi in the heated pan and leave it there until it is crispy. Make sure you don't burn it.

2. Tadka is optional. If some of you don't prefer some extra oil and spice you can go ahead and avoid making the tadka. Let me just say, without the tadka as well, the recipe is going to fly on its own.

3. While making the tadka, always make sure you turn off the gas first, then add the chilli powder to avoid it from burning. If it is burned, the colour of the dish will also be effected.
